EUCHL ANNOUNCES EXPANSION TO BUDAPEST, HUNGARY WITH THE BUDAPEST HUSSARS
New university ice hockey franchise to bring international collegiate hockey to Hungary's capital for the 2028–2029 season
BUDAPEST, HUNGARY — The European Union College Hockey League (EUCHL) is proud to announce the addition of the Budapest Hussars, an exciting new university ice hockey franchise scheduled to begin competition during the 2027–2028 season.
The expansion into Budapest represents another significant milestone in the EUCHL's continued growth throughout Europe and reinforces the league's commitment to combining competitive university ice hockey with international higher education opportunities.
As one of Central Europe's most recognizable and vibrant cities, Budapest offers an exceptional environment for developing a successful university hockey program. With its rich sporting traditions, internationally recognized universities, and growing interest in ice hockey, the Hungarian capital is positioned to become a premier destination within the EUCHL.
Introducing the Budapest Hussars
The Budapest Hussars will proudly represent the city of Budapest, embracing Hungary's historic military traditions through the Hussars identity.
The Hussars were renowned Hungarian cavalry soldiers recognized for their courage, discipline, determination, and fighting spirit. These qualities will form the foundation of the franchise's identity both on and off the ice.
The team's official colors will feature Hungarian-inspired red, white, and green, reflecting national pride and the franchise's connection to Budapest.
Home Arena — Vasas Jégcentrum
The Budapest Hussars plan to establish their home at Vasas Jégcentrum, a modern ice hockey facility in Budapest with an approximate seating capacity of 2,000 spectators.
The arena is expected to provide an exciting atmosphere for university hockey, offering fans, students, and local supporters the opportunity to experience competitive international ice hockey.
The proposed venue will serve as the centerpiece of the franchise's game-day experience, featuring university hockey competition, community engagement, and entertainment.
Final arena arrangements remain subject to agreement.
A New Opportunity for Student-Athletes
The Budapest Hussars will recruit talented student-athletes from North America, Europe, and other international hockey markets.
Through the EUCHL model, players will have the opportunity to continue their competitive hockey careers while pursuing university degrees at participating educational institutions.
The franchise intends to establish partnerships with universities in Budapest offering internationally recognized academic programs, including English-language degree opportunities.
The goal is to create an environment where student-athletes can develop academically, athletically, and personally while experiencing life in one of Europe's great capital cities.
Continued EUCHL Expansion
The addition of the Budapest Hussars is part of the EUCHL's broader vision to establish a premier international university ice hockey competition across Europe.
With existing franchises and additional expansion markets being developed throughout Central Europe, the league is building a competitive structure designed to provide student-athletes with an alternative pathway combining higher education and high-level hockey.
Budapest is expected to become an important market in that growth strategy, offering strong potential for attendance, corporate partnerships, merchandise sales, and regional hockey development.
Building a Hockey Tradition in Budapest
The Budapest Hussars organization will focus on establishing a competitive and professionally operated university hockey program that develops strong relationships with the local community.
Future announcements will provide additional information regarding university partnerships, coaching appointments, player recruitment, season tickets, corporate sponsorship opportunities, and the official unveiling of the team's uniforms.
